This study aims to assess the effectiveness of using the Bar Model Method in Mathematics Year 5 based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Key points of this study were to grade the existing capabilities of pupils in answering any mathematical questions in the form of HOTS, the pupils difficulties to answer HOTS math questions, the effectiveness of the Bar Model in improving the achievement of pupils in Year 5 in answering HOTS math questions and the Year 5 pupils' perceptions on the HOTS math questions after being exposed to the Bar Model Method. The quasi-experiment method was used with a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to answer these questions. A total of 35 pupils from a primary school in the District of Kinta, Perak were involved in this study. Quantitative data analysis used was the descriptive and inferential statistics (t-test). The qualitative analysis of the study was through the interview. The existing data proved that the ability of pupils to answer each HOTS math questions were very weak. The post-test mean scores of the pupils were significantly improved than their mean scores in the pre-test. Through the interview analysis, found that there are three main factors that contribute to the difficulty of the pupils in answering mathematics questions in HOTS which are hard to understand the questions posed, difficult to understand the requirements of the question and could not determine which operation is suitable for the question. Through the analysis of the questionnaire, there was a positive change in the pupils' perceptions of HOTS math questions after Bar Model Method was used. In conclusion, pupils perform better and also have a positive perception of HOTS mathematical problems after following the process of teaching and learning with Bar Model Method. © 2014 IASE Publisher.
